Book Culture on Columbus to Open Soon!
UPDATE! – Book Culture on Columbus is Now Open–be sure to stop by for the Grand Opening Party on Wednesday, December 3, at 7 p.m.
As reported by WestSideRag, Book Culture on Columbus will be opening shortly–just in time for some serious holiday shopping! Yesterday the store’s blog announced their Grand Opening Party, scheduled for Wednesday, December 3rd at 450 Columbus Avenue. While the promise of the new store has been advertised on the location’s windows for some time now, the management has done a great job of maintaining interest in their imminent opening by inviting local residents to show their support. (See photo below.)
Recently, westsidewriter got a glimpse of the store’s interior, which looks warm, inviting and well-lit.
Meanwhile the Book Culture folks continue to run a busy schedule of events at their 112th Street location (Book Culture has a third store at 2915 Broadway). Mixed in with more academic offerings, for example, tonight’s reading and discussion of Kathleen Frederickson’s new book, The Ploy of Instinct: Victorian Sciences of Nature and Sexuality in Liberal Governance, are readings for children, an upcoming open mic night, and on this past Sunday, Tea and Letters–“an afternoon dedicated to reviving the art of the handwritten letter.”
If the last event is any indication, Book Culture knows how to throw a party (or a tea). Not only did the store supply writing materials, postage, and a comfortable place to sit, but a generous afternoon tea was offered including cucumber sandwiches, cookies, and fruit. About five people were in attendance between 2 and 3 p.m., scribbling in companionable silence while soothing jazz played in the background. Time raced by and before long, westsidewriter had completed two letters and whiled away a very enjoyable hour.
