Saturday Night Reader
The weather forecast may be calling for snow, but don’t let the big chill stop you from joining in “The Big Read” this Saturday night at 7 p.m. Goddard Riverside Community Center will launch this project–designed to get Upper West Siders to read and discuss the same book–at this kick-off event featuring an author appearance, live music, theater and refreshments. The selected book, “The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears”, was written by Upper West Side resident and MacArthur Award winner, Dinaw Mengestu. Mr. Mengestu will sign copies of his book which will be on sale for $10. Goddard Riverside is located at 647 Columbus Avenue (between 91st and 92nd Streets.) Register here.
The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears tells the story of Stepha Stephanos, an Ethiopian immigrant, who moves to Washington, D.C., where he struggles to cope with his feelings of loneliness and displacement, and to make a new home. From Goddard Riverside’s website:
This book was chosen based on its cultural relevance and themes of gentrification, isolation and immigration.
“The Big Read” continues through February and March with several opportunities to discuss the book and related issues, as well as an Open Mic night, at various Upper West Side sites. The full list of events is available here. More info about the book can be found here –and the New York Times Review of The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears, which coincidentally begins with a reference to the UWS, is here.
