The Big Read Gets Bigger
The Big Read, the NEA-funded project launched in our neighborhood by Goddard Riverside, is going strong. Dozens of Upper West Siders are reading and discussing “The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears” by Dinaw Mengestu (pictured above).
If you haven’t joined in, there’s still time. The book is available at our local bookstores and libraries, and on-line. Upcoming events include:
- Today (February 7): Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale: A reflection on gentrification in Harlem through a fusion of spoken word poetry, theater, song and more. Performed by Harlem KW Project, LLC at the Bernie Wohl Center, 647 Columbus Avenue, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, February 10: Book Discussion at Book Culture, 450 Columbus Avenue at 7:00 p.m.
- Thursday, February 26: Book Discussion at Bloomingdale Library, 150 W. 100th Street at 5:30 p.m.
All events are free of charge although reservations may be requested. (A full list of events is available here.)
Here are a few scenes from the February January 24 kick-off event at Riverside-Goddard. Those in attendance enjoyed a reading by, and interview with the author, a dramatization of selected scenes in the book, and a delicious and colorful Ethiopian dinner.
